Hillcrest Drive Elementary and Music Magnet is located in the Baldwin Village neighborhood of Los Angeles, a densely populated urban area, in which 95% of all residences are apartments. The school has a 43.5% transiency rate. Operating on a traditional school calendar, the Community School serves grades Transitional Kindergarten through 5th. Approximately 50% of our scholars are African American. 47% are Latino, and 3% are White.
In addition to the community school that serves the largest number of students, Hillcrest offers rich and innovative instructional programs including school-within-a-school models in music and foreign language:
- a Music Magnet program that provides a single class in each of 1st through 5th grades; Hillcrest Elementary and Music Magnet is the only elementary music magnet school in the Los Angeles Unified School District and offers orchestral instrument instruction in piano, strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion
- a Dual Language Spanish Immersion Program (70%/30% model) consisting of a single classroom in grades K-5
- a Common Core Technology Project 1:1 iPad initiative where every student has an iPad to support innovative learning
- a trauma-focused schools approach that ensures the social-emotional and mental health needs of our many students who have suffered adverse childhood experiences are addressed with empathy, compassion, and care
Hillcrest is a school-wide Title 1 designation and is currently in Program Improvement status. Community school enrollment is 500 students. The magnet houses approximately 100 students and the dual language program serves another 100 students.
Hillcrest's 5th grade students matriculate into Audubon Middle School or a number of magnet and charter school options.
