Dear Hillcrest Parents and Caregivers,
THANK YOU. It’s important to begin this message with these two simple but powerful words because you believe in Hillcrest. You have entrusted your most precious to me and the rest of the Hillcrest faculty and staff. I am humbled by your trust. I take the responsibility ever so seriously.
Thank you also for providing me the chance to work with and serve the very greatest, most resilient, creative, capable, and compassionate youngsters to be found anywhere. I am the luckiest principal in the world.
Thank you, again, for a great first week. The first day of school is always hectic, but we dealt with the morning enrollment rush and ended the day well. Since then the days have been superb. Our students are eager learners, well behaved, and sharp.
I promise you that this year will be a special one for your child. We will be hard at work throughout the year to provide her or him with the very best education to be found anywhere. Our commitment is to ensure that every child makes a year’s academic progress as well as social and emotional growth and that they advance toward becoming their best selves. In the process, we grow as educators and become better too.
We will be implementing a new English Language arts program, Benchmark Advance, that features a strong balanced literacy approach. Our teachers will working from a powerful mathematics framework known as Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), through a partnership with UCLA. We know that with intense training and collaboration amongst ourselves and with other schools pursuing the same instructional excellence, we will improve our test scores and academic achievement of our scholars.
I will continue to build partnerships with you through some tried and true and also new parent engagement structures. First up, on Wednesday, August 30, Hillcrest Happy Hour with the Principal will take place from 4:45 to 6:00 PM in the evening in the Hillcrest library. Nonalcoholic “mocktails” and other refreshments will be served as we get acquainted and discuss items of importance to you.
Then on Thursday, September 7, we have Back to School Night from 4:30 – 7:30 PM. This year’s Back to School Night will celebrate our school community’s return to the school year and the promise that it holds for student learning and achievement. We will have a DJ, student performances, barbers on hand to trim our boy’s hair, and more! Of course, the highlight of the night will be joining your child and teacher in their classroom to get an overview of the instructional program, homework policy, communication norms, and more.
Speaking of policies, we are a uniform school. Why? Because we are a team! Please make sure that your child is in uniform Monday through Thursday (Fridays are college spirit free dress days) so they can earn some special treats for wearing it.
More information will be communicated about events and future programs that you will be invited to this year. Don’t forget that your school website is a great place to start to always stay in the loop. Go to www.hillcrestdriveschool.org to access everything there is to know about Hillcrest this year! Be engaged! Be involved! Your child deserves it!
If you have any questions or concerns about this school year, please don’t hesitate to let me know. You have multiple ways to communicate with me.
